There are three original Polios;" Abortive polio" Polio A This only goes as far as headaches.
"Non paralytic" Polio B The same as polio A plus some envolvement with muscular aches, pains and spasms.
"Paralytic" Polio Auxilliary This is all of above plus nerve envolvement that can cause Paralysis and all other problems traditionally associated with "Polio".
Polio Auxilliary was the only polio to be immunised against. In the English language immunity means complete and absolute protection. "Immunity from prosecution" is exactly that. Medical immunity does not mean immunity, it means "some protection" that is all.
There are two ways to vaccinate for Polio protection. The "inactivated vaccine" (Salk) where the paralytic Polio virus was inactivated by formaldehyde, leaving antibodies against that virus, which are injected to supply protection. The "living attenuated virus" (Sabin vaccine) is basically, a virus, still living enough to breed, but to weak to paralyse. The theory is, that by giving this virus orally, to enough people, it will cross with the "paraylitic polio"in the polution so that the new hybrid version will spread to everyone to protect them. This Sabin vaccine protects 75 - 95%, NOT the lot, and it never has completely eradicated Polio even though in some places ignorant doctors say so.
The Stalk vaccine was injected and never was as good - only 70 - 80% after three injections. This is text book stuff and should be know to all the health professionals.
